GOT IT!

Came here to Stanford with one goal, run under 28:10, Olympic B standard. It's a thought that ran through my head at least once ever 60 seconds from Mt Sac on. Now that it's accomplished I feel a sense of relief and, damn that was close!

The first 5k of the race was a breeze. I split 14:00 feeling like a million bucks. Everybody was still together at this point, the whole field strung out like a train with myself running off peoples shoulders on the outer half of lane one. My aim was to split between 14:00-14:05 and work the second half, maybe negative split if feeling good. Just as I was marveling at how perfect everything was going the leaders decided they'd like to negative too, only when they picked it up the pace went from 67's to 66's. A significant change for a guy who averaged just under 68 two weeks earlier in running a 25 sec PB.

The result of this pace increase formed two options, go with and maybe run really fast but risk blowing up or stick with the established pace. Remembering my one and only goal of this race I decide not to go. My finishing time of 28:07 attests to the fact it was the right decision. What made the last 4k particularly challenging though was that guys seem to either go with the faster pace or drop off mine. 6-9k of the race was lonely territory for me. This is where I used up that five second buffer from my 5k split. Coming into the last lap I needed a 68 to break standard. Seemed like an easy enough task only the lap previous was a 69! Made for a nail bitter finish as Emily, Dave and the guys can speak to. Finished in a 64.7, 2.8 seconds under B standard.
